Who we are, in brief

Muasi Telema ASBL — Mwasi means "woman", telema means "stand up, rise" — is a non-confessional, non-partisan non-profit founded by Congolese women jurists specialized in family law. It helps women and families turn legal ignorance, family conflict and economic fragility into knowledge, peace and self-reliance, through four programs: Know Your Rights (plain-language legal education), Family Mediation, Stand Strong (psychosocial support) and Hands That Provide (skills and a trade).

Founded

Kinshasa, 10 March 2020, by Congolese women jurists.

Legal status

A non-profit association (ASBL) under DRC Law No. 004/2001 of 20 July 2001.

Where we work

Kinshasa and its surroundings, and Bandundu — then beyond, as needs and means allow (Article 4).

Programs

Four: Know Your Rights, Family Mediation, Stand Strong, Hands That Provide.

What we can speak to

Our women jurists can offer informed, on-the-record commentary on:

  • Congolese family law and the 2016 Family Code reform
  • Widows' rights, inheritance and "property grabbing"
  • Family mediation as an alternative to court
  • The gap between rights that exist in law and rights women know about

We protect the confidentiality and safety of the people we work with. We do not share identifying details of any individual case, and we never promise court outcomes.
